It's easy to notice just how much we are bombarded with negative news and issues of all kinds each time we check the news or just go online.
It's become common place to be met with a dose of negativity (sometimes even misery!) to go along with your morning coffee. But why should it be?
Yes, bad news will always exist but why should we only be placing our focus on it alone when there's also so much positivity to explore out there that just aren't getting enough highlight that it deserves.
One of the reasons why I also decided to design this concept was that a website like this required me to take a bit more of a minimalist approach when it comes to the design (some of my other designs have a bit more of a loud or colorful approach and I wanted to challenge myself to learn how to pull back and not add too much) as it's more about letting the positive news itself take center stage and making sure the UI design isn't too loud or distracting from the news/content itself.
The Effects of Constant Bad News:
Constant exposure to bad news can have several negative effects on individuals and society as a whole such as:
Anxiety and Stress: Consuming a steady stream of negative news can contribute to heightened levels of anxiety and stress and crises can trigger feelings of fear, helplessness, and despair, negatively impacting mental well-being.
Desensitization and Apathy: Over time, constant exposure to bad news can lead to desensitization, where individuals become less responsive or indifferent to negative events which can lead to apathy, diminishing empathy and reducing the motivation to take action or address societal issues.
Distorted Perception of Reality: A constant focus on bad news can create a distorted perception of reality. It gives the impression that the world is more dangerous and negative than it actually is, leading to a skewed worldview and increased pessimism.
Lack of Context and Perspective: Bad news tends to grab attention, but it often lacks the necessary context and perspective to fully understand complex issues. This can lead to a shallow understanding of events and contribute to misinformation, misconceptions, and biased viewpoints.
Disempowerment and Helplessness: A continuous influx of bad news can create a sense of helplessness and disempowerment, as individuals may feel overwhelmed by the scale of problems and believe that their actions cannot make a difference. This can hinder motivation and engagement in efforts to create positive change.
While it is essential to stay informed about important events and challenges, the constant bombardment of bad news can have adverse effects on individuals' mental health, perception of reality, trust in media, and societal cohesion. Striving for a more balanced and nuanced information diet that includes positive news can help mitigate these problems and promote a healthier and more optimistic outlook.
Well-rounded Perspective: While it is important to stay informed about global challenges and issues, consuming solely negative news can lead to a skewed perspective of the world. Positive news websites provide a more well-rounded view, offering stories that celebrate achievements, highlight progress, and showcase the beauty and diversity of the human experience.
Balance and Mental Well-being: In a world where mainstream media often focuses on negative events and crises, people seek a more balanced perspective. A positive news website can provide uplifting stories, inspiring examples, and solutions-oriented reporting. It helps to maintain mental well-being by offering a counterbalance to the overwhelming negativity.
Health and Well-being: Constant exposure to negative news can contribute to stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Positive news websites, on the other hand, can promote well-being by reducing stress levels and promoting a more positive mindset. This can have a positive impact on overall health and happiness.
In summary, people want positive news websites to balance the overwhelming negativity in mainstream media, find motivation and inspiration, foster optimism, restore faith in humanity, encourage community engagement, gain a well-rounded perspective, and promote mental health and well-being.
After discovering and exploring the need for more emphasis on good news, I then started to draft out the wireframes for some of the pages for the website.
Once I finished creating the wireframes for the different pages of the website, I then started to work on the actual UI design by incorporating colors and the branding of the website that I decided to name 'Positively Pressed'.
I have future plans to design the admin panel or the backend of the website where the writers of the news can publish and edit their writing, where the analytics of the news published can be viewed and studied, and other admin work regarding the running of the website can be done.
Thank you so much for your time and attention! I greatly appreciate you taking the time to look through my work and process for this website concept.
